What Happens When You Delete an Asset

Deleting an asset has the following effects:

Findings

Security findings associated with the deleted asset are retained in the findings database. They remain queryable from the Findings page for audit and historical analysis. However, the findings will no longer link to a live asset record.

Vulnerabilities

Vulnerability findings correlated to this asset are retained in the vulnerability database. Like security findings, they remain in the system for historical reference but will no longer be associated with an active asset.

Inventory Records

Inventory data (installed software, packages, configurations) collected from this asset is removed along with the asset. Inventory snapshots and change history for this asset will no longer be available.

Policy Assignments

All policy assignments targeting this specific asset are removed. Group-level policy assignments are unaffected (the asset is simply no longer a member).

Attack Graph

The asset's node and all its edges are removed from the attack graph in the next computation cycle. Attack paths that previously traversed this asset will be recalculated without it.

Sensor Binding

If a sensor was bound to this asset, the sensor is unbound but not deleted. The sensor will appear as unbound in the Sensors page and can be bound to a different asset.

Asset Group Membership

The asset is removed from any asset groups it belonged to. The groups themselves are unaffected.

Audit Log

The deletion is recorded in the audit log, including who performed the deletion and when.

WARNING

Deletion is permanent and cannot be undone. If you are unsure, consider marking the asset as Inactive instead. Inactive assets are excluded from evaluations but can be reactivated later.

Alternatives to Deletion

Before deleting an asset, consider whether one of these alternatives better fits your situation:

SituationAlternative
Asset is decommissioned but you need audit historySet status to Inactive via Edit Asset
Asset is a duplicate of another assetUse Resolve Conflicts to merge instead
Asset was created by mistake with wrong detailsUse Edit Asset to correct the details
